About us

We are Philip and Samantha who co-own the Calavey Kennel Club affix founded in 2011. We live on the outskirts of Bridgwater, Somerset and actively show at all levels locally and countrywide.

We are a small hobby show kennel and breeders, who only breed occasionally and as Royal Kennel Club Assured Breeders (UKAS Accredited) we take breeding for Health and Conformation of paramount importance. We have been showing for several years together, although Philip has previously owned and shown Akita's. We both now enjoy showing our dogs and have gained a real buzz and enthusiasm for doing so together, even if a little friendly competition between us.

In 2017, after the first year Jack Russell Terriers were exhibited at Crufts and 2016 being the first year The Royal Kennel Club registered the breed, we obtained our first Jack Russell Terrier, Gilda born in November 2016. Philip had many Jack Russell's as a child so for him this was an easy choice for us to make. Gilda, 'Appaloosa Status Triple Crown Del Calavey' arrived with us from Italy and from there we have grown our JRT family.

We both also judge at open show level with the hope that one day we may be privileged enough to be able to award Challenge Certificates in one or even possibly all our beloved breeds. We are members of The Jack Russell Terrier Club and Philip is also a Royal Kennel Club Member.

Well that is enough about us for now, please take a look around and find out more about our beautiful and treasured canine family members.

History of Calavey

In 2011, we were honoured to own our first show Staffordshire Bull Terrier "Reggie" - Aboriginal Boomerang Boy of Calavey who managed to gain his Stud Book Number in his short show career with us. Shortly after Reggie, we obtained Roxie who was so special in so many ways, who became 'Champion Pantycelyn Just A Dream of Calavey ShCM' - and she certainly delivered that dream for us! She had a fantastic show career winning 3 x CCs with a BOB, 2 x RCCs and winning Best Bitch and Best of Breed at LKA (no  CCs) 2015. Later, in her first Veteran class in 2019 she won Best Veteran in Breed and Veteran Terrier Group 4 then went on to win Best Veteran in Show at The Terrier Club of Devon and Cornwall in 2022.

Sadly, Reggie passed over Rainbow Bridge much before his time at 4 years old. However, Roxie lessened the blow by producing a beautiful litter of five bitches of which we kept two! Camie, 'Calavey's Magical Dream' and Lexie, 'Calavey's Gonna Be Magical' both of which we actively showed with much success. In addition, to our beautiful Staffords, we branched out in 2013 and purchased our first French Bulldog Dawn, 'Frabull's Vicar Of Dibley With Calavey' who we started to show very lightly. French Bulldogs are a difficult breed to crack, but we liked the challenge of a new breed especially one as fun and fantastic as the Frenchie! Dawn blessed us with two litters of which we kept for show. Sydnee 'Calavey's Athena' did not enjoy the show ringbut still managed to do us proud by producing 'Champion Calavey's Fenella At Rischale'

We made the decision at the end of 2019 to retire our Staffords and Frenchies to concentrate all our efforts in the future of Calavey, with our Jack Russell Terriers.

What our Calavey extended family members are saying...............

"We chose Calavey as they were KC breeders, caring and were true lovers of their dogs. I can not fault them in anyway. Spud is the most wonderful little dog (who seems to be a big dog trapped in a little body). I am sure he is as happy and calm as he is because of his parents and his start to life with Sam and Philip."

"We chose to get a puppy from Calavey as the way they operate really appealed to us. The health and well being of their dogs is definitely the most important thing to them and they aren’t a money making machine like some breeders. Their dogs live in a fantastic home environment, they are members of the family as they should be and clearly well loved. We were welcome to meet all their dogs and all had lovely temperaments not to mention gorgeous! I would highly recommend Sam and Philip and I wouldn’t go anywhere else for a puppy."

"My Beautiful Baby Bean came from Sam and Phil, they kept me up to date from when Her mum Bambi was expecting the litter and I had lots of regular pictures from birth to 8 weeks old when collected her after meeting and choosing her at 6 weeks old .

we are in regular contact and they have been extremely supportive .

Bean is one in a million and anyone would be honoured to have one of their carefully bred and raised puppies ❤️"

"We have had the best experience with Calavey, from the very beginning we felt privileged to be having one of these French bulldog puppies, we were chosen by them !

They don’t do this for money they have a responsibility to this breed Calavey puppies go to the best homes and they are with you for life to support and guide if needed Bella is 7 this year and brings nothing but joy every day to our life’s Health wise , she is 100% ,no nasal issues, skin conditions , amazing temperament, no hip/joint issues all because breeder know what they are doing !

They say you pay for what you get , and that’s so true!

We have invested in a quality bitch and it shows Our only regret….. we didn’t wait have one of the latest puppies!

Bellas sisters litter , lucky people to be welcoming these gorgeous bundles into their lives 🥰"

"After the wild west of internet searches, it was a relief to find Calavey - dog welfare is at the heart of what they do and are. We were on a waiting list for about a year before welcoming Monty (Calavey's Dib Dab, brother to Jelly Bean) in April 2021. He's been a joy ever since, a good natured and (generally) well behaved chap with a substantial village fan club (who we meet in the pub)! Having the confidence that he came from a good family background and we have that support is invaluable."

"I waited over a year for Calavey’s Mrs Kensington … ‘Margo’ and she was worth the wait. I found Calavey on FB and fell in love with James 007. Sam was extremely helpful from the first point of contact through to collection and was happy to answer all my questions and I was kept up to date through pregnancy and once puppies were born. I met all the lovely Calavey dogs and was given a very in depth information puppy pack with Margo.

Thoroughly recommend Sam and Calavey. May need some help on the trimming side at some point though Sam!!"

"We were lucky enough to get our stunning Roma from Sam and Phillip and it was the best decision we could have made. She has the most loving, fun and sweet nature and is a true testament to the invaluable start she had to life from Calavey. Sam and Phillip were both extremely helpful and supportive from the start, and we would highly recommend them."

"Chip has settled into life in Northern Ireland extremely well. To all the followers of Calavey I just wanted to tell everyone how wonderful Sam an Philip have been. From speaking with Sam 2 years ago, up until meeting Chip at their home on 9th October. I would highly recommend the Calavey Kennel an anyone out there wishing to purchase a puppy, go ahead as this kennel is absolutely amazing."
